Scion/Vice Magazine Photo Contest

I regularly check the Vice blog (www.viceland.com). I like to get my kicks out of the Dos and Dont. In fact, their Dos and Don't has influenced my current photo project.

I took noticed today, because I'm very apparent of the left side of the screw. That they have a contest that started back on March 15th and running until May 15. 1st prize is a $1000 USD, fuckin' sweet. Problem, it is in conjunction with Scion. The Scion tag made me check the Terms of Service.

"All individuals who submit original photograph(s), complete an Entry Form (defined below) and comply with these Official Rules in all respects are considered "Entrants." Entries that are submitted by mail become the physical property of the Sponsor and will not be returned. All Entrants submitting photography as part of the Contest will be non-exclusively licensing (with the unlimited right to sublicense) to Sponsor and Producer the right to use such photographs, and the images related thereto, for any purpose (including any and all commercial purposes) with the right to modify the photography and make derivative works thereof. Producer and Sponsor may run multiple contests and promotions simultaneously. Entry in this Contest does not constitute entry into any other promotion, contest, sweepstakes or game. All entries must satisfy all of these Contest "Official Rules" in order to be eligible to win Prizes."

Poop, I want to keep the rights to my original work. I've become a big fan of Negativland recently, and I like the idea of their Creative Commons of No Commercial Use idea. Free contests with $1000 wins are lovely. But, I don't want to give the copyright of my work to a commercial business. I still want to be able to print it and give the photo to people myself and not have to worry about being sued of my own work.

Why can't we just be friends Scion? I'd like you to just laugh at my work and not own it, market it, and not let me enjoy the fruits of my labor. Why you gotta hate?

YOU! Man, I saw that you called. I am so sorry that I haven't called you back: I haven't forgotten about you! See, I was out of town until the 4th, then sort of lost track of my phone that weekend. Now, I'm out near DL, but I think I might be back in on Friday. Have you any free time?
